Ausgrid Paddington

Client: Paddington Zone Substation 342, Young Street, Paddington, NSW – Roofing and Associated Works, Paddington Zone Substation, Project No. AG8734/17 – Ausgrid

The Paddington Zone Substation is part of the Ausgrid power supply infrastructure feeding electricity to the communities of the Inner Eastern suburbs. As part of Ausgrid’s ongoing preventative maintenance and modernisation programs, Murphy’s were selected to carry out the replacement of the metal roofing of the 11kV switch room and the removal of the dated substation fire resistant doors.

Murphy’s have SC1200 trained trade personnel to work in live Ausgrid substations including scaffolders, roofers, friable and non-friable asbestos removers and brick layers.
To allow safe access for the roof work, Murphy’s used Spandeck walkway and parapet wall top hand rails to provide perimeter fall protection. Falls through the roof were prevented by Murphy’s Safe Working at Heights trained staff using safety harnesses, anchor points and static lines when the roof space was open, until such a time as safety mesh could be installed and certified to AS4389.

One of the main constraints with the roof replacement work was the requirement to keep the substation water tight at-all-times. Murphy’s project team achieved this through sectional replacement of the roof, removing and replacing a considerately measured area progressively each day, so the roof was covered at the end each day. The site management team monitored the weather forecast and actual conditions on-site to ensure that no work was carried out in wet weather. The main roofing material used was Lysaght 0.48BMT Kliplok in Shale Grey, agreed with the client. Flashings were installed in 0.55BMT Gull Grey. Roof anchor points in 316 grade stainless steel were added to allow for future safe maintenance access on the roof.

The 11kV switch room contained defunct heritage listed switchgear equipment. Even though this was not in use, Murphy’s built a temporary timber frame and timber sheet structure around it to ensure it was protected during the roofing works above.

Fire protection is one of the chief design requirements for substation buildings in the Ausgrid network. Paddington Zone Substation had several fire doors in place to separate substation rooms and compartments and slow down the spread of any potential fire. Being designed and fitted in the 1960’s these doors were nearing the end of their usable lives and obsolete, containing now prohibited friable asbestos material used as fire proofing inside the metal door casings.

Murphy’s removal of these doors involved a thorough pre-work visual inspection and then sealing and wrapping of the doors in 2 layers of plastic. The doors were then removed using mechanical handling aids and transported to a licenced asbestos disposable facility. The appropriate notifications were made to SafeWork NSW under Murphy’s friable asbestos removal licence and handled using Murphy’s own friable asbestos removers with the appropriate SC1200 Ausgrid substation training. An independent licenced asbestos assessor carried out air monitoring during the works and a clearance inspection to confirm completion.
