Project: Bondi Public School façade spalling and roof replacement
Murphy’s was engaged by the NSW Department of Commerce’s Soil Conservation Service to remediate the façade and replace the roof of Bondi Public School.
This $500,000 project was carried out while the school was in use and fully occupied.
In addition, friable asbestos was found in the ceiling space during our initial inspection. Murphy’s was able to remove and dispose of this hazardous material without impacting on the School or the project schedule.
All the work was completed to a very high standard and Murphy’s delivered the project on budget and on time.
Bondi Public School was built in 1882 and extended in 1928.
With this historical significance in mind, Murphy’s worked with a Heritage Architect and an independent Engineer and assigned our most experienced and qualified heritage masonry tradespeople to this project.
- The entire façade of the building was repaired and repointed using traditional techniques.
- Existing penetrations were prepared for keying and bricked up.
- All concrete spalling was remediated and finished to match the surrounding surfaces.
- The window openings were propped and rusted lintels removed and replaced.
- As work progressed it was inspected and certified by our independent engineer.
To ensure the safety of our team, as well as the staff, students and visitors to the school, we erected and certified encapsulated height scaffolding – including handrails at roof level.
Our qualified roofing team removed the roof tiles in stages, replacing it with coastal grade COLORBOND® steel sheeting on the same day to keep the building watertight.
As part of the roof replacement we:
- laid, lapped and tied galvanised safety wire mesh, to Australian Standards.
- installed roof insulation as specified by the Architect.
- installed flashing and cappings to make the roof watertight
- removed old guttering and replaced it with new heritage-style eaves and gutters
- replaced all downpipe stacks and accessories and connected these to the stormwater system.
Once our team had erected and certified access to the roof, Murphy’s management team inspected the ceiling space with an independent NATA Accredited Hygienist. Friable asbestos was found.
Murphy’s holds an AS1 & AS2 licence so was able to safely remove and remediate this hazardous material without impacting on the School or the project schedule.
